Eli Whitney's Biography
Eli Whitney was born in Westboro, Massachusetts, on December 8, 1765. Eli made and fixed various machines to keep a job and paid his way through Yale University. Upon his graduation 1792, he traveled to Savana, Georgia, where to teach while studying law. On a trip South from New England, Eli made the acquaintance of another traveler, Catherine Littlefield Greene, widow of the American Revolutionary General Nathanael Greene. She told Eli the importance of Southern cotton merchants for a device to clean the cotton. Eli built a simple device that revolutionized the cotton industry. Eli also revolutionized the musket manufacturing. Eli got a contract to supply 10,000 muskets to the US government for 2 years. Due to his success in his musket making methods, Whitney is credited with pioneering the use of precise inter changable parts assembled to a final product on a production line. He helped develope the machine tool industry by inventing many of the machines required byhis new production methods.
Eli's First Influence The Invention of The Cotton Gin
On a trip South from New England, Eli Whitney, a recent graduate of Yale University, made the aquaintance of another travelor and she told him the importance of Southern cotton merchants for a device to clean the cotton. Whitney used her basement as a shop to develope his ideas. The cotton gin was a comb like device to clean the cotton, and it is probable that that Whitney simply mechanized this manual process. Despite arguments about the origin and invention of the cotton gin, There is no question that Whitney built and patened a rather simple device that revolutionized the cotton industry.
2nd Influence is His Musket Manufacturing
Eli Whitney revolutionized the firearms business.Eli received a contract in about 1797 to supply the US government with 10,000 muskets in two years. For one of his extension request he mounted a public demonstration for government officials. Eli dumped a pile of equipment to make 10 muskets, and challenged the officials to build the 10 muskets. The officials completed the task and were convinced of the value of Whitney's production methods. Do to the success in his musket making methods, Whitney is credited with pioneering the use of precise inter changable parts assembled to a final product on a production line. Eli helped develope the machine tool industry by inventing many of the machines required by his newproduction methods.
After Eli's death on January 8, 1825 in New Haven, The armplant was placed under control of his son Eli Whitney Jr.

Here are some fun facts about Eli Whitney. Around Eli's birth the stamp act imposed the first direct taxes on the American colonist. The first medical school opened in Phelidelphia. At the time of Whitney's death John Quincy Adams was the president of the US. The Erie Canal opened around the time of Eli's death. The New York Stock Exchange opened also.
