On a trip South from New England, Eli Whitney, a recent graduate of Yale University, made the aquaintance of another travelor and she told him the importance of Southern cotton merchants for a device to clean the cotton. Whitney used her basement as a shop to develope his ideas. The cotton gin was a comb like device to clean the cotton, and it is probable that that Whitney simply mechanized this manual process. Despite arguments about the origin and invention of the cotton gin, There is no question that Whitney built and patened a rather simple device that revolutionized the cotton industry.
